We like to think that money is just numbers—math, logic, and spreadsheets.
Many of us carry deep-seated "money stories" from childhood that quietly dictate our adult spending habits. A money story is the narrative you formed about finances when you were young—the beliefs about worth, security, and power absorbed from your parents, environment, and early experiences. These are often emotional wounds rather than just habits.
If you grew up believing money was scarce, you might hoard it out of fear or spend it frantically to prove you have it. If you grew up with shame, you might avoid looking at your bank account altogether, hiding bills the way you might have hidden a poor grade in school.
In our work at Cam Impact Financial Coaching, we see three primary stories that sabotage budgets:
- Scarcity: The belief that there is never enough, leading to extreme anxiety and an inability to enjoy life even when financially stable.
- Abundance (The "Use It or Lose It" Mindset): An impulsive reaction where money is spent immediately because it feels fleeting.
- Shame: The feeling that you aren’t "good with money" or that your financial struggles reflect your personal value, leading to avoidance and isolation.
You can download every budgeting app, watch every finance influencer, and create the perfect spreadsheet, but if your story remains unaddressed, the system will eventually fail. When stress hits, we revert to old communication dynamics and behavioral patterns.
Before you can create a budget that works, you have to complete Phase 1: Discovery. You must gain awareness of these beliefs, fears, and behaviors so you can map out your story and learn how to rewrite the ending.
True emotional, relational, and financial freedom requires a step-by-step path from chaos to legacy. If you are tired of repeating the same cycles and are ready to align your spending with your values, we are here to guide you.
